BUILT TO LAST – 50 YEARS OF THE PEUGEOT 504

It was the Car of the Year for 1969, defeating the BMW E3, the Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina and the Jaguar XJ6. It was a car that would be seen across the world – from Paris to Sydney and from Nairobi to Lagos.

Naturally, your head would have been turned by the Jaguar XK120, the Morris Minor, the Sunbeam-Talbot 90 and the other new vehicle while on the Austin display is an open tourer which featured a power-operated top.

In Time magazine of last year Dan Neil very rudely referred to the Amphicar Model 770 as a ‘vehicle that promised to revolutionize drowning’ and went on to argue that ‘Its single greatest demerit — and this is a big one — was that it wasn’t particularly watertight.

Michael Carpenter is a young man with a mission and his most recent challenge was the restoration of a vehicle now so rare as to make the Jaguar XK120 appear positively common and one that is sure to draws crowds wherever it goes. It is, of course, a 1984 Morris “Ital” 575 Van.

During my primary school years, one of our close neighbours owned a dark grey 1966 Amazon Estate and compared with the Ford Cortina Mk. IIIs and Datsun 120Y Sunnys that populated the village, the Volvo looked far older than its years.

The TR4 is, in my ever so humble opinion, an exceptionally handsome motor car; purposeful, commanding even, and beautifully proportioned. The coachwork blends the ruggedness of the previous TRs with such refinements as winding windows that 1961vintage sporting motorists were already starting to crave.
