Remember to have your say on the future of our classic community!

Last month, the government launched a consultation giving enthusiasts the chance to have their say and help shape future policy on how to protect classic vehicles and safeguard our industry for generations to come.

The current policies have been in place since the 1980s and have not adapted as technology that supports the restoration and rebuilding of vehicles, along with those being converted to electric, has evolved. The call for evidence is asking for views on the proposed changes to registering historic, classic, rebuilt, and electrically converted vehicles to make them fit for the modern age, while prioritising road safety and retaining accurate vehicle records. The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) are also looking for suggestions, based on knowledge and expertise, that may help improve the registration process for these vehicles.

Transport Secretary, Mark Harper, said: “The way we restore and protect classic cars has not kept up with the times and evolving technologies, which is why we are calling for industry and enthusiasts to have their say on how to best protect these British classics for decades to come.”

The call for evidence is the latest part of the government’s plan to back drivers, support skilled jobs in the £18 billion classic car sector, and grow the economy, and the DVLA have asked for views by 4th July. If you’d like to have you say, you can do so on the government website here.

Julie Lennard, DVLA Chief Executive Officer, said: “As evolving technologies continue to improve the way classic, historic and rebuilt vehicles can be modified and restored, we want to ensure that we keep the policies and registration processes for these vehicles up to date. This is one of the many ways we are looking to make things easier and simpler for our customers and we want to encourage enthusiasts and those individuals and organisations with a keen interest and expertise to share their views with us.”

At Lancaster Insurance, we’re passionate about protecting our community for future generations to enjoy and support the government in this latest step. It’s so important that classic car enthusiasts, clubs and businesses voices are heard so we’d call on everyone to take the time to have their say!
