20 July 2018
We’re thrilled to announce that a record number of over 12,000 people attended this year’s Lancaster Insurance Classic & Supercars show, up 20% from the last one day event in 2016! On the day, over 1,900 classic, motorsport and supercars were displayed over 36 acres of Sherborne Castle Estate, with 661 of the cars being displayed coming from over 40 car clubs.
Dave, Tom, Hugo and Andrew manned our stand in the picturesque setting of Sherborne Castle. We had two fantastic cars on display; a Land Rover Series 1 Station Wagon and a 1981 Mk1 VW Golf GTI.
The Land Rover was one of two that set out on the long ‘First Overland’ expedition from the English Channel to Singapore with six undergraduates from Oxford and Cambridge and we we’re giving you the opportunity to enter our FREE prize draw giveaway to win the Golf! If you weren’t at the show and would still like to enter, click here before 30th November 2018 to be in with a chance!
The selection of cars on display was fantastic and the tour and parades were once again show stopping and they included the Wessex Ferrari Owners Club and PistonHeads’ tours, a Rally Car parade and a Supercar parade.
This year’s marque feature was Land Rover with some 20 cars in the special feature including the royal open vehicle (loaned by the British Motor Museum) used by the Queen and Prince Philip throughout the 60s and 70s and the prototype 1948 model (courtesy of The National Motor Museum Beaulieu) plus more than 30 other private vehicles on display.
Another fantastic addition to the day was the attendance of Paddy Hopkirk MBE after an invitation from close friend and ex-team mate, patron of the show and fellow rally driver Brian Culcheth.
Paddy signed autographs and chatted to many show attendees, he took the lead in the Rally Car parade and was also reunited with the Mini in which he won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally, (again kindly loaned by The British Motor Museum).
Chairman of the organising committee, Penny Underwood said: “We are delighted with the support from our sponsors, exhibitors, the public and of course Rotary club volunteers. Once again we will be able to make substantial donations across a range of local charities, including this years’ headline charity Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.”
Dave Youngs, Car Club Manager at Lancaster Insurance, comments: “It was fantastic to be back as headline sponsor; the atmosphere was electric and the combination of classics and supercars was incredible! We were once again tasked with the honour of judging the club awards and there were some tough decisions made as everyone had pulled out all the stops! Congratulations to everyone involved for another successful show!”
