Think of some truly iconic car marques and it’s likely that, before too long, Porsche will spring to mind.
The German manufacturers have produced some truly awe-inspiring vehicles in their history to date.
And we’re pleased to say that, here at Lancaster Insurance Services, we’ve been privileged to arrange insurance for many of these much-loved sports cars.
Many of the classic vehicles for which we provide insurance are sports cars – and, within that group, a substantial number are products of the great company founded in Stuttgart back in 1931.
Arranging insurance for a sports car can be an expensive business.
Many insurance providers may take one look at the car’s value, desirability and – of course – its performance credentials, and slap a high insurance premium on it.
And, if the car in question is regularly being put through its paces, there may be some justification for these high insurance charges.
However, at Lancaster Insurance Services we understand that many owners of classic sports cars – Porsche and others – are careful drivers who take great care over their cars and, where possible, garage them securely.
Given this, we use our extensive contacts within the classic car insurance industry to find cover that fairly and accurately reflects both the value of your classic and the amount of care you take over it.
We have arranged insurance for quite a few models from Porsche’s illustrious motoring past.
Porsche cars for which we’ve provided insurance include the 924, 928 and 944 pop-up headlight trio; the nippy, convertible Boxster; that interesting joint project with Volkswagen, the 914; and the various generations of Porsche’s iconic flagship sports car, the 911.
A candidate for the most revered and instantly recognisable sports car of modern times, the Porsche 911 is now onto its eighth generation, having first emerged back in 1964.
Confusingly, the first generation of all – now an undisputed classic, and a nailed-down candidate for Porsche classic car insurance – is also known as the 911 (or 911 ‘Classic’ in some quarters).
Subsequent generations have each been given a number in the 900s.
So, the second-generation car is known as the 930 (or the Porsche Turbo, as that was the first generation to get turbocharged engines), the third generation was the 964, and so on.
Each generation of the Porsche 911 has much to recommend it, all of them boasting superb performance and eye-catching looks.
Some, such as the original 911, are now very desirable cars on the used market and as such will command high resale prices.
Other generations, though, will be somewhat cheaper – and that is certainly the case for the 996, the fifth generation of the car and the first to use water-cooled engines, rather than the air-cooled units used up to this point.
Good question. After all, the 996 appeared in 1999, and the last models rolled off the production line as late as 2004 – when it was replaced by the all-new Porsche 997.
You might be thinking that this makes the Porsche 996 altogether too new a model to qualify for classic Porsche insurance.
Surely, you’re thinking, the types of cars suitable for this specialist form of insurance are decades-old classics like the Jaguar E-Type, Mk1 Ford Escort or, well, the original Porsche 911?
We know that defining a car as a ‘classic’ is often as much about the way it is looked after, as it is about a date on a number plate.
Say that the car is lovingly maintained; that the owner takes care to seek out genuine replacement parts, avoiding any modifications that alter the car’s character; and that the vehicle isn’t subjected to the sort of heavy mileage that can result in rapid wear and tear.
In these cases, the car may be more suited to a classic car insurance policy through a specialist broker, rather than a standard car policy.
What’s more, Porsche is such a prestigious marque that its cars typically pass into classic status not long after they cease production.
And we know that a typical Porsche owner will love their car and lavish plenty of care and attention on it.
That's why we believe owners like this need a car insurance policy that reflects the dedication they put into looking after their car and provides a suitable level of protection.

In May 2018 the Department for Transport announced that cars that were built more than 40 years ago exempt from MOT testing, with the option for owners to voluntarily have their car tested if they feel it needs checking.
Let’s take a moment to provide you with a car insurance overview, so you can make an informed decision about what form of car insurance policy will be best for you.
An insurance policy for classic cars is deliberately designed to protect a certain type of vehicle, with different characteristics and usage patterns from a normal car.
For instance, as defined by insurance providers, a ‘classic car’ typically won’t be an owner’s only car – or may not be their ‘daily driver’, at least.
Owners may notch up a relatively low annual mileage in these vehicles, which may also be stored away from the public highway – for example, on a drive or in a garage.
These cars are well looked after and subject to relatively little wear and tear, and this is typically reflected in lower classic car insurance premiums.
A classic car owner will usually take greater care of their cars and the way they drive them, and insurers – including us here at Lancaster – believe that this should be reflected in the price you pay for your annual insurance policy.
Classic car insurance also brings certain benefits, too.
Limited Mileage Discounts. If you do cover relatively limited miles in your Porsche (or other classic car), we may be able to reflect this with a discount on your annual insurance cover.
Two Year Agreed Valuation. Modern cars, being so familiar and still available in large numbers, are fairly easy to value – and thus to find an accurate insurance figure for. An insurer will have a clear idea of that car’s market value, and therefore of how much it will cost to replace. Armed with this information, they can make an accurate calculation and deliver a suitablequote to insure the vehicle.
With classic cars, however, the situation is slightly different. Demand for particular models can fluctuate, particularly if collectors suddenly develop an interest in a particular model.
As a result, classic car owners could risk finding themselves with a quote for insurance that doesn’t match the value of their car.
Here at Lancaster, we can remove this uncertainty with our Agreed Valuation.
This is a valuation for your car, agreed upon by both you and us, the insurance providers.
As its name suggests, the Valuation is binding for two years, at which point the car is revalued.
Having agreed valuation in place means that if your classic car is stolen or written off, the true value will be covered minus any applicable excesses.
There’s more information on the Agreed Valuation on the relevant page of the Lancaster Insurance Services website.
You may want to consider joining an owner's club for support and advise on your classic, as well as a range of other benefits.
These groups get together to show off their classic cars to each other at meets, shows and drives; they also typically have a lively online presence where members can ask each other technical questions about their car, and seek advice on finding an elusive part or restorer.
In short, joining the UK owners’ club for your particular car or marque is a great idea on so many levels.
One other major advantage is that many owners’ clubs have relationships with specific insurance providers that give members discounts on their annual insurance policy.
If you’re a 996 owner, check out the Porsche Club of Great Britain.
If you’d like to find out more about arranging insurance for your Porsche 996, or other classic car, it really could not be easier. You can fill in the form on our website to get a quote, including your personal details as well as all the information you can supply about your car.
Information that will help us to give you an accurate quote include an estimated annual mileage, details on how the car is typically used, plus any accidents and convictions within the last five years.
If you have your car registration number to hand, this will also help to speed the process along. The more details you can provide, the more straightforward it will be to get your car insured.
At this point you can also specify whether you need a comprehensive insurance policy for your car, or you would prefer third party, fire and theft cover.
You can also amend your voluntary excess, and choose your payments schedule (annual or monthly).
You also have the option to request a call back, where one of our operators will aim to call you back at the time you have requested to discuss your requirements.
Or, if you want to speak to us straight away, you can call us on 01480 484826 and one of our team members will be only too happy to discuss your various insurance options.
We provide insurance for a wide range of classic cars. We have been in the insurance business for almost 40 years now – in fact, we started life as the insurance division of the MG Owners’ Club.
Porsche owners will be pleased to know that insuring sports cars has been in our DNA since the very beginning!
We like to think of ourselves as the insurance broker of choice for classic car owners.
How have we come to be such major players on the classic car insurance landscape? Simply, because we always strive to find the best price for each driver’s particular cover needs.
We know how important it is to classic car owners to get the cover they require, at a price that seems fair to them.
We’re also very proud of the various benefits that our insurance features.
We listed some of these above, but you can find a full list on the insurance page of our website.
If you’re a fan of German cars in particular, you’ll be pleased to know that we have arranged insurance cover for a range of classic cars from BMW, Mercedes and Audi as well as Porsche.
Indeed, a car like the E30 BMW 3 Series is such a recognised classic that we’ve written an entire buyers’ guide for the model, sharing tips on what to look out for in a used E30.
Over on the Mercedes side, the legendarily bulletproof W123 saloon – the precursor of today’s E-Class – is another car for which we are often asked to arrange an insurance policy.
If you’re a Porsche 996 owner or admirer, we imagine you like your sports cars, so you’ll be pleased to know that we regularly arrange insurance for some iconic British speedsters, from the Jaguar E-Type to the Triumph Spitfire.
Indeed, the latter car was a recent winner of the Pride of Ownership awards, sponsored by Lancaster Insurance Services and running as part of the NEC Classic Motor Show.
Porsche owners will be pleased to know, by the way, that one of the finalists for that year’s award was a Porsche 914 in Zambezi Green!
When it comes to rivals for the Porsche 996, two classic cars for which we have provided cover spring to mind.
On the one hand is the Honda NSX, a truly awesome feat of engineering and one of our favourite sports cars of the past few decades – we discussed it in more detail in this feature.
Another contemporary 996 rival was the great Jaguar XKR, which we picked out as a future classic not long ago.
Much like the 996, the XKR – especially a well-tended example – is now likely to be a prime candidate for specialist insurance for classic cars.
We hope this has been useful in explaining how, even now, your Porsche 996 may well be eligible for classic car insurance – and in revealing the various benefits that this specialist form of insurance can offer.
If this sounds like the type of insurance you need, why not contact us for a quote?
